『地域研究へのアプローチ　グローバル・サウスから読み解く世界情勢』を読みました。本書は「グローバル・サウス」と「地域研究」の二つのキーコンセプトで書かれています。「グローバル・サウス」とは、地理的に南半球の国々という意味のほかに、経済的格差や貧困などの問題を構造的な意味で比喩的に南北に分けた場合の「南」、すなわち「途上国」、「南」と「北」の諸関係を内包する呼称という意味を持ちます。「地域研究」とは、ある国や地域を対象に長期滞在や調査に基づき、政治・経済・社会を総合的に学際的に、その国や地域の側から見た研究です。本書は、このグローバル・サウスに位置づけられる国や地域の貧困、移民・難民、紛争、開発の問題を取り扱っています。例えば、それぞれの国や地域は決して等しく貧しいわけではありません。その歴史的文脈や政治経済的な力関係、社会規範、貧困者の主体性など様々な主体の事情や動機があり、貧困は社会的に作られる側面があります。本書は既存の欧米的な視野による常識に疑問を抱き再考を促す書と言えます。 I read "Approach to Area Studies: World Situation read from Global South". This book is written with two key concepts, "Global South" and "Area Studies". "Global South" means not only the countries of the Southern Hemisphere geographically, but also the "South" when problems such as economic disparity and poverty are figuratively divided into north and south in a structural sense, that is, "developing countries". It has the meaning of a name that includes the relationships between "south" and "north." "Area studies" is a study of politics, economy, and society from the perspective of a country or region, based on long-term stays and surveys. This book deals with poverty, migrants/refugees, conflicts and development issues in the countries and regions of the Global South. For example, each country or region is by no means equally poor. There are various actors' circumstances and motives such as their historical context, political and economic power relations, social norms, and the independence of the poor. It means that poverty has an aspect of being socially created. It can be said that it is a book that urges reconsideration by questioning the common sense from the existing Western perspective.
